In our last days of the route along the West Coast of the United States, our steps took us to the less touristy and less visited Phoenix. That it is not one of the destinations that travelers are marked in red does not mean that it has no appeal, here we tell you 10 things to see and do in Phoenix.

To plan your trip, check out our UNITED STATES WEST COAST GUIDE

After leaving Sedona, its infinite trees and reddish rocks, we started rolling south, the south really: welcome to deep Arizona! Finally we saw thousands and thousands of cacti * _ * Well, to be exact they are called saguaros and they are the state symbol. We do not hesitate to stop to take some pictures with these wonders of nature ...

Can you find Rober in the photo?

A few hours later we arrived in Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, and we received a heat that neither Cordoba in August, luckily the city is full of breweries where to drink a good juice of artisan barley and refresh the mountain body! But the spoilers are fine: if you are looking for ideas of what to see and do in Phoenix, we have already told you that you are in the right place ... we will tell you 10 things you can't miss in this city.

Soak up art

Phoenix is, increasingly, a creative city, in constant artistic evolution. If the roll of thestreet art We leave you this link where you can see where to find the best urban art works in the city.

If you are more than "traditional" art there is a visit that you cannot miss: the Phoenix Art Museum, where there are an infinity of works of art coming from every corner of the globe. The jewels in the crown are the "Portrait of George Washington" by Gilbert Stuart, the "Suicide of Dorothy Hale" by my dear Frida Kahlo and "Pink Abstraction" by Georgia O'Keeffe, one of the most interesting American artists.

> Price: $ 18 (free on Wednesdays from 15 to 21, the first Friday of the month from 18 to 22 and the second Sunday of the month from 12 to 17).

Learn more about Native American art at the Heard Museum

This museum is one of the essential things to do in Phoenix, especially if you are interested in art, and there are not many more specialized museums in Native American art, traditional and contemporary. You can enjoy a high range of ceramics, jewelry, clothes, sculptures and paintings. That said: if you love art, stop by.

> Price: $ 18 (free from 18 to 22 every first Friday of the month).

Visit the Botanical Garden of the Desert

It is one of the largest and most beautiful in the United States (and yes, filled with beautiful cactus cactus). Is found in Papago Park and it has more than 56 hectares and thousands of species of plants. The best time to visit it, of course, is in spring, when flowering is a true spectacle.

> The only negative note? The ticket price: $ 24.95, auch!

Have a craft beer, or two ...

Or whatever you want, come on! We recommend the Mother Brunch Brew brewery, we discovered it thanks to the boys of our hostel and we could not have imagined a better place. The beer menu is super original and quite extensive. You can also choose several sizes of glass (from the typical pint to a pint of 4 ounces, about 120ml, to try several beers), live the US breweries!

We did a mini tasting and I fell in love with a beer, the Mounds stout (which tasted like chocolate and coconut). Rober says that this is not true beer (buu) and preferred more classic options such as Golden ticket, a pale-ale with citrus flavor. The truth is that you have to go and try a few ... the pint only costs $ 2 so you can make a cheap tasting J (10 ounce glasses cost $ 4 and you paint $ 6).

Enter the Museum of Instruments (MIM)

If you are passionate about music, you will love this museum: here is some great relic (like a elvis guitar) and an immense collection of musical instruments from every side of the world. It is an interactive museum and yes, you will be able to listen to all the sounds you want. There are also very interesting concerts and events.

> Price: $ 20

Stroll through downtown

The truth goes ahead: downtown Phoenix is not, by far, among the most interesting in the United States, but this does not mean that it is not worth a visit. Here you can dive in the past of the city, a good example is the Rosson house and the Heritage square With his Victorian style. You can also eat something delicious (pizza from Pizzeria Bianco it's a legend) or visit the oldest church in Phoenix, the one in St. Mary Church.

Fatten a few kilos

Mexico is there, just around the corner, and this means one thing: Phoenix's Mexican food is delicious ... don't miss the opportunity to try it, for us it was a discovery on this trip, and we love it! Some of the Mexican restaurants Best rated are:

  • Rito's Mexican food, specializing in burritos and chimichangas at a great price.
  • Kiss Chickens Sinaloa Style, cheap and good quality, famous above all for the kiss taco and papa taco.
  • Irmas Kitchen, with many Mexican dishes and a few “gringas” options. Home cooking and affordable prices.

Climb the Camelback Mountain

This mountain on the outskirts of Phoenix, takes its name for its resemblance to the hump of a camel. If you want to reach the top you will have to climb some 365 meters And with the heat, that's a lot. So do not forget water: you will need it. Of course, the views are very beautiful (or so we have been told since we were not XD). We have a good excuse: there was a heatwatering heat wave. Pfiu!

Trekking in South Mountain Park

The South Mountain Park is the largest urban park in the United States: It is amazing how being so close to Phoenix can offer a total disconnection from the steel jungle of the city. Getting here, you see, is very simple. Once here a few hiking options await you. If you want to get an amazing view of Phoenix and the Sonoran Desert, make the effort and climb up to the Dobbins Lookout. Don't forget water, lots of water!

> Trick for lazy: you can also climb the Doobins Lookout by car XD

Approach Sedona

Less than two hours from Phoenix you will find several state and national parks in the Sedona area. It is a little known but very interesting place. We have already told you about everything to do in Sedona. It can be a perfect one-day getaway, although if you have time we would say that 2-3 days are ideal to enjoy its nature.

Red Rock State Park in Sedona, Arizona

:: Where to sleep in Phoenix?

We slept in HI Phoenix (The Metcalf House Hostel), a suuuper colorful hostel with a lot of personality. Here slept a few famous people among which is Manu Chau 🙂 What a fuck. They have several weekly activities, when we went there was a movie night in the garden, everything was very nice, with little lights and a giant projector. What we liked most was the common area, very cozy and warm and the patio garden, beautiful.

We slept in a private room but, obviously, there are also bedrooms. In the morning there are free breakfasts (pancackes, fruit, tea, coffee). Price of the bed: $ 27
